Created in 1962 by designer Bill Curry, Stemlite represented a new type of lighting, replacing the traditional leg and lampshade light with an all-in-one design with interchangeable modules. Reissued today by Gubi, nearly half a century later, the collection, true to its original design, includes two wall lights, two standing lamps and one pendant, in a contemporary yet authentic colour palette. With a history in aerospace, Bill Curry captured the spirit of America from the 1960s and 1970s, from space conquests to pop trends, when he set up his own studio, Design Line, in Los Angeles in 1962. He then envisioned new standards, made possible by emerging technologies, and designed innovative, bold, and colourful lamp collections to suit a new era. The Stemlite collection is inspired by flower stems, both thin and sturdy. The light is fitted with a cast metal base, reminiscent of a tulip stem, with a blown-glass globe mounted on top and a very simple cylindrical switch. The visual consistency of the Stemlite collection means the different models can be combined in residential, communal and commercial spaces. The organic shape of the lights works equally well in bold, modern spaces and more classic environments.
